At Alexander McLeod Primary School, we believe history makes a valuable and distinctive contribution to pupils’ education.

Learning about the past and the methods used to study sources and draw conclusions help pupils to understand and contribute to the world in which they live.

We believe a high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and how it links to our lives today. Good quality history teaching should prepare pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement in both history and all areas of their lives.  A well-planned and sequenced history curriculum helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. We teach children to understand how events in the past have influenced our lives today; we also teach the children the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem-solving. We believe that having sound historical knowledge and skills will help equip children for their futures in education, the workplace and citizenship.
