Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium was introduced by the Department for Education (DfE) in 2011, as additional funding for pupils who receive Free School Meals or who are Looked After Children. This is because the DfE have recognised that good education is the key to improving young people’s life chances. This is particularly true for children from low-income families, or who are Looked After Children, who are far less likely to leave schools with good results than other children. The Pupil Premium, using additional resources from outside the School’s Budget, is intended to address the current inequalities by ensuring that funding reaches the pupils who need it most.

There are three categories of children that qualify for pupil premium. They are:

  • Children in the school who have received free school meals over the past six years.
  • Children looked after by the Local Authority.
  • Armed forces children.

The DfE have stated that schools have the right to spend this funding as they see fit based upon their knowledge of pupil needs.

“Schools, Headteachers and teachers will decide how to use the Pupil Premium allocation, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for individual pupils.”

PE and Sports Premium Funding

How we are able to use the PE and sport premium

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.

This means that we should use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers

  • make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

For example, we can use our funding to:

  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers

  • provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively

  • introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport

  • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs and holiday clubs

  • run sport competitions

  • run sports activities with other schools

We do not use our funding to:

  • employ coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements.

  • teach the minimum requirements of the National Curriculum - including those specified for swimming (or, in the case of academies and free schools), to teach your existing PE curriculum.
